What is Syphilis
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It progresses through different stages: primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary.
Common Clinical Presentation
-
Primary Stage: A single sore (chancre) or multiple sores at the infection site, usually firm, round, and painless.
-
Primary Stage: Sores appear 3 weeks after exposure and heal without treatment in 3-6 weeks.
-
Secondary Stage: Skin rashes, often on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
-
Secondary Stage: Mucous membrane lesions in the mouth, vagina, or anus.
-
Secondary Stage: Fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, hair loss, muscle aches, and fatigue.
-
Latent Stage: No symptoms, but the infection remains in the body.
-
Tertiary Stage: Severe medical problems affecting the heart, brain, and other organs.
-
Tertiary Stage: Can occur years after the initial infection if left untreated.
