What is Acid Reflux (GERD)

Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is a condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus. This backwash (reflux) can irritate the lining of the esophagus.

Common Clinical Presentation

  • Heartburn (a burning sensation in the chest)

  • Regurgitation of food or sour liquid

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Feeling of a lump in the throat

  • Chronic cough

  • Laryngitis (hoarseness)

  • New or worsening asthma

  • Chest pain, especially when lying down

Lifestyle Changes:

Avoid foods and drinks that trigger reflux (e.g., spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine, chocolate).

Eat smaller, more frequent meals.

Avoid lying down immediately after eating; wait at least 2–3 hours.

Elevate the head of your bed.

Maintain a healthy weight.

Medications:

Antacids to neutralize stomach acid.

H2 receptor blockers (e.g., ranitidine) to reduce acid production.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs, e.g., omeprazole) to block acid production and heal the esophagus.

Surgery:

In severe cases, surgical procedures like fundoplication may be considered.

Dietary Adjustments:

Identify and avoid trigger foods and beverages.

Healthy Lifestyle:

Maintain a healthy weight and avoid smoking.

Regular Check-ups:

Consult with a healthcare provider for ongoing management and monitoring.
